Tonight the St. Louis Cardinals (51-47) make their second stop on this two city road trip to take on the Los Angeles Angels (39-61), as their first game of four this week at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California. Yesterday in the rubber match against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cardinals blew a 7-0 lead that resulted in an 8-7 D-Back comeback victory in 10 innings. No doubt the flight from Phoenix to Anaheim was the longest one-hour flight of the entire 2026 Redbirds season so far. On the mound tonight for the Cards is RHP Kyle Leahy (7-4, 3.73 ERA), who in his last start on July 10th against the Atlanta Braves at Busch Stadium had his night cut short due to rain. Though the game would eventually continue and turn into a 2-1 Redbirds victory over the Braves, the 2+ hour long rain delay that night ensured Leahy's efforts would not resume with the game. Over the period Leahy did pitch that night, he throw 3.0 IP, allowing 1 hit, no runs, no walks and racking up 2 strikeouts. At the time Leahy's night ended in that water logged affair, he had thrown 44 pitches. Leahy comes into his start tonight against the Angels with 10 days rest, following a very abbreviated outing, and should be otherwise very fresh. In Leahy's two full starts prior to July 10th, he was on a streak of 2-0, where he only allowed 1 earned run over 10.0 IP (13.0 IP if you include the rain delay shortened start). Leahy over that full 13 innings span is tossing to the tune of a 0.69 ERA. Ever since his Sunday start against the Miami Marlins on June 28th, Leahy has seemingly appeared to have turned a corner in his performance as a starter. The Cardinals very much need him to make those changes permanent. Taking the ball this evening for the L.A. Angles is the 27 year old RHP Jose Soriano (8-6, 3.49 ERA), who since June 1st for the Angels has a record of 2-2 over 8 starts. Soriano is not pitching to the eye watering numbers he was achieving early in the year, and Soriano over those aforementioned previous 8 starts has accumulated a 4.99 ERA over 39.2 IP. In some ways it has been a tale of two very different seasons performance wise for Soriano in 2026. He has a clear propensity for tallying up strike outs in rather large numbers, while keep his walks and hits allowed to a very limited extent. Though combined batting average against Soriano in June had opposing hitters connecting to a .281 clip. Soriano is experiencing a stretch of extremes, and it is difficult to say which Soriano the Redbirds offense will encounter tonight at Angels Stadium. Can the Cardinals make a definitive statement tonight by bouncing back from their embarrassing and inexcusable loss yesterday in Arizona?
