The World Cup final is being played inside a stadium FIFA cut apart. MetLife lost 1,740 permanent seats, four concrete corners and its artificial turf. Two days out, nobody knows if it's eredivisie ready.

Machines injected synthetic fibers below the surface so the roots could lock around them. FIFA banned an artificial field, then reinforced the real one with plastic. Vinicius Jr said it dried out and slowed the game. Rabiot called it hard and rigid. Deschamps suspected concrete underneath.

Outside the building it gets harder. MetLife sits five miles from Manhattan behind highways, rail yards and parking built for cars, and nearly 80,000 people have to arrive and leave through a shuttle train on a line with no regular daily service. New Jersey spent $35 million on a busway. NJ Transit budgeted roughly $48 million across the eight matches and tried to recover it with a $150 round trip before backlash and sponsorship money brought it to $105 and then $98. Dallas offered a roof and climate control. Los Angeles offered a $5.5 billion stadium. FIFA rejected both and took the open air one in the Meadowlands. On Sunday, that decision gets judged in 90 minutes by more than a billion people.
