With the release of The Odyssey comes the inevitable headaches that seem to plague most large format films, namely, their exhibition across a range of varying screen sizes and viewing environments. But what if all the conundrums faced by Nolan today had been faced by another filmmaker nearly 100 years prior? As it turns out these format fiascos are nothing new and history can teach us some valuable lessons. In this video, we look into one early widescreen Western, shot on two separate formats, for two separate theatrical releases, all long before wars would be waged over this topic.
