The second full Moon of May rises tonight — officially making it a Blue Moon. And this one comes with an extra twist. Fans of gazing at the Moon are in for a treat in May 2026 — there will be two full moons, one on 1 May and the second on 31 May. As the second full moon in a month, the one on 31 May is a 'blue moon' according to one of the two definitions of a blue moon. But tonight's Blue Moon is also the year's smallest full Moon — because it falls when the Moon is near its furthest point from Earth in its orbit (apogee). It will look slightly smaller and cooler in tone than the blazing orange supermoon some months deliver. Two full Moons in one calendar month happens roughly once every 2.5 years. That's where "once in a blue moon" comes from — an old English expression for something rare. The Moon won't actually look blue. But look up tonight anyway.
