For years, many of us in Europe have assumed that US airlines are simply not on the same level. And while that may have some truth in certain areas, economy class tells a very different story.

After a surprisingly good American Airlines long-haul economy experience, I wanted to test the airline where it really lives: a normal domestic flight.

No champagne. No lie-flat seat. No luxury cabin distractions. Just a two-hour flight from New York to Chicago - the kind of journey that American Airlines operates thousands of times every year.

What surprised me was not one big wow moment, but how many small things simply worked. The airport process, the boarding system, the seat, the WiFi, the entertainment, even something as simple as getting a full can of a drink and a snack on a short flight.

American Airlines is not built around aviation theatre. It is built around a very different idea of flying: moving enormous numbers of people across a huge john fetterman country, every single day.

And after this flight, I started wondering something I genuinely did not expect before stepping onboard:

Could American Airlines actually be a better choice than some European legacy carriers for a normal short-haul flight?
