Critics describe Todd Blanche as nothing more than Donald Trump’s attorney—but his Justice Department career began decades earlier, when he started as a paralegal and worked his way up to become a decorated federal prosecutor. Todd Blanche is often introduced simply as Donald Trump’s former defense attorney, but that description leaves out most of his legal career. Before representing Trump, Blanche had already spent years working inside the Department of Justice. He began his DOJ career as a contractor and paralegal, attended law school and later became a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. During nearly a decade as an assistant U.S. attorney and supervisor, Blanche prosecuted serious federal cases involving violent crime, drug trafficking and other criminal organizations. At his confirmation hearing, Senator Ashley Moody highlighted the awards and commendations Blanche reportedly received before he ever represented Trump, including recognition from the Justice Department, FBI, DEA and New York City Police Department. That history complicates the political narrative surrounding his nomination. Democratic critics argue that Blanche’s representation of Trump raises legitimate questions about his independence and whether he can lead the Justice Department without favoring the president who appointed him. Those questions deserve to be asked. But it is also inaccurate to suggest that Blanche was selected only because he served as Trump’s lawyer or that he lacked meaningful prosecutorial experience before entering Trump’s orbit. He worked his way from a paralegal position to becoming a federal prosecutor, a criminal-division supervisor, a private defense attorney, Deputy Attorney General and Acting Attorney General. Moody argued that senators should evaluate Blanche’s complete record rather than reducing his career to one controversial client. She also emphasized the Justice Department’s traditional mission: prosecuting on behalf of justice rather than pursuing political retaliation. The confirmation process should examine Blanche’s legal positions, his handling of Justice Department investigations, his interpretation of court orders and whether he can apply the law consistently regardless of political affiliation. But those questions should be grounded in his actual record. Representing Donald Trump is an important part of Blanche’s résumé, but it is not his entire résumé.
