Every week, we're going beyond the headlines to explore the issues shaping Michigan, and hear directly from the people at the heart of the issues. In episode two of Deep Dive, Remington Hernandez sits down with Michigan's Attorney General Dana Nessel to talk about the ever-evolving and ever-contentious debate on data centers. Nessel has long been wary of data centers and how they could drive utility bills up. Her office is pushing for contested cases at the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), so advocates can review and challenge specifics. She tried doing so for the Open AI data center project in Washtenaw County's Saline Township, but was denied by the MPSC. "What does it say to everyone in this state," Nessel asked. "I guess that the Michigan Public Service Commission is more invested in the utilities making a profit than they are in protecting rate payers." In Wayne County's Van Buren Township, however, Google is allowing a contested case for its proposed data center. The Attorney General's office just submitted testimony in the case. Nessel appreciates the transparency, while also wanting to limit energy credits for the company and seeking more money if and when Google leaves.
