Emily Wilson’s Odyssey [TadFw5BsumR]

Emily Wilson, the first woman to ever translate the Odyssey into English, calling on the muse at Pittsburgh’s International Poetry Forum. Dr. Wilson is Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, holding the College for Women Class of 1963 Term Professor in the Humanities. Wilson attended Oxford University (Balliol College B.A. in Classics and Corpus Christi College M.Phil. in Renaissance English Literature) and Yale University (Ph.D. in Classics and Comparative Literature). She has been named a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome in Renaissance & Early Modern scholarship, a MacArthur Fellow, and a Guggenheim Fellow. Over 1,000 people—including hundreds of students—visited Carnegie Music Hall on a snowy Friday night for this event. This reading took place in December 2024, 50 years after Richmond Lattimore’s visit to the International Poetry Forum. Since 1966, International Poetry Forum has hosted hundreds of the world’s greatest poets and performers, including legends like Grace Kelly, James Earl Jones, Gregory Peck, Anthony Hopkins, Seamus Heaney, Mary Oliver, Chinua Achebe, W.H. Auden, and Jorge Luis Borges. #emilywilson #homer #iliad #odyssey #translation #ancientpoetry #ancientgreek #literature #humanities #internationalpoetryforum #poetry #englishpoetry #poetrylovers #poetrygram #poetsofinstagram #poetrytok #classics #classicalpoetry #liberalarts #theodyssey #odysseus #proem #emilywilsonodyssey #greek #classicliterature #emilywilsonodysseytranslation #pittsburghpoetry #poetryreading #spokenword [International Poetry Forum, 2024.
