A study published in Science in February 2026 by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania examined the X chromosomes of three Neanderthal specimens and found something that changes the entire picture. Neanderthal X chromosomes carried sixty two percent more modern human DNA than their other chromosomes. Modern human X chromosomes showed the precise opposite. That asymmetry has one clean explanation, and it is not biological incompatibility. It is social structure.

What the DNA reveals is not just who was mating with whom forty thousand years ago. It reveals how Neanderthal society was organised, and why that organisation made their extinction structurally inevitable long before modern humans arrived in numbers.
