Special footage of Big Bear eagle siblings Luna and Sandy before they dispersed on their own journey. 🦅❤️ It breaks my heart that Mom Jackie never got the chance to see her kids one last time before they left. 💔 I hope that one day, somewhere in the skies over Big Bear, they will find each other again. Cherish these precious moments of Luna and Sandy before they began their next chapter in the wild. On the morning of Thursday, July 23, it seemed that our beloved bald eagle siblings, Luna and Sandy, had already made the decision to leave their nest habitat and begin their grand journey into other parts of the Big Bear Lake forest. Like every morning, they woke up early. Sandy flew from the nest tree to meet Luna on the Simba Tree, and the two spent precious time together there before flying from one favorite perch to another. At each perch, they lingered for a while, practiced their flying skills, and simply enjoyed each other’s company. They also returned to the nest with Dad Shadow after noticing the visiting sub-adult eagle nearby. Luna and Sandy spent the longest time together on the Simba Tree, Luna’s favorite perch. As I watched all of the footage from that morning, I had a strong intuition that they might be leaving their nest habitat for their own bald eagle journey. Dad Shadow had not brought them any fish for more than two days. They were probably hungry, and my heart broke for them. Since Jackie’s absence, Shadow had done an incredible job raising the kids, tirelessly providing 7–8 fish a day while protecting Luna and Sandy by defending the nest habitat from visiting sub-adult eagles. But after the visiting sub-adult eagle began aggressively entering their territory, Shadow had to spend much of his time watching over and defending the nest. He was constantly on alert, protecting his family from the intruder. Luna and Sandy also stayed vigilant, helping their dad defend their home. My personal observation is that Luna and Sandy chose to disperse sooner than later after Shadow stopped feeding them and as the visiting sub-adult eagle became a more frequent presence in their territory. Of course, only the eagles know the true reasons, but that is how it appeared to me as I watched their behavior. The nest habitat has felt so quiet since Luna and Sandy left. I truly miss their presence and the sound of their calls. Because I had the feeling that it might be the last time I would see them on the live camera, I decided to record as many of their special moments as I could. One of the things I loved most was the incredible bond between these two siblings. They genuinely enjoyed being together. They perched side by side, stared at one another, flew together, played together, and shared so many beautiful moments. Every time I watch those final moments before they dispersed, I become emotional and struggle to hold back my tears. They have found a special place in my heart. I miss seeing them every day, perching together, soaring through the sky together, and even competing to be the first one to claim the fish. I miss all of those precious memories. I don’t know if we will ever see Luna and Sandy return to their nest habitat again, but I truly hope we do. I pray that they both live long, healthy, and happy lives, and that one day they each find a mate and raise families of their own, just like their beloved parents, Jackie and Shadow.
