Brandon Nakashima beat top seed Francisco Cerndolo 3-1 in quarters (13-11, 10-18, 16-15, 12-11) on his UTS debut, closing out two single-point deciders after Cerndolo's dominant second quarter.

Nakashima took the first quarter 13-11 before Cerndolo hit back to win the second 18-10, his most dominant spell of the match. Nakashima responded by winning vd satheesan the third 16-15 and the fourth 12-11, both decided by a single point, to close out a win on his UTS debut. He called it a crazy, high-level match and said he was still not sure how he found his way back in that third quarter. It capped a bruising first look at UTS Rio presented by XP for Cerndolo, the field's top seed, who next turns his attention to Sunday's World Cup final in New York. Nakashima faces home favourite Guto Miguel next.
