The KOSPI opened up 2.8 percent at around 6,780 and extended its record-breaking rally. After slipping at the close before the long weekend, despite hitting an intraday high, the index maintained strong upward momentum throughout today's session. It started from around 6,598 and climbed steadily, with gains widening to nearly five percent intraday, breaking past 6,780 and even topping 6,930. The benchmark closed at 6,936, up 5-point-1 percent on the day. It not only set a new intraday record but also finished at an all-time high. With the rally accelerating, the once-distant "7,000 mark" is now within reach. SK hynix also made headlines, becoming the second Korean firm after Samsung Electronics to surpass a one-trillion-dollar market cap. It reached a fresh record high in just a single session. After plunging from its early-April peak, the stock has staged a sharp rebound. It fell from 1-point-45 million won on April first to the 1-point-1 million range by the 14th, before quickly recovering. It rebounded to the 1-point-22 million range on the 22nd and climbed back to 1-point-28 million by April 30th. Over that period, the stock surged about 59 percent. The rally continued after the holiday. On May fourth, SK hynix closed at 1-point-447 million won, up 12-point-52 percent from the previous session. Still, concerns are emerging over the rapid run-up. The long-standing market adage "Sell in May" is also coming back into focus. Experts warn that short-term volatility could pick up this month. With geopolitical risks still in play, experts also point to the possibility of profit-taking by foreign investors, potentially leading to portfolio rebalancing and increased selling pressure.
