As we move into the election year, two pictures of the economy have been presented in the past 24 hours, one great, the other not so great. The economic think tank NZIER said business confidence is at its strongest since March 2014. A net 39 percent of firms expect better economic conditions. That's up from 17 percent. But electronic spending stats show the Christmas retail spend was down on last year.
