As a child, she never owned a Black doll, so her mother lovingly repainted dolls' hair and sewed new dresses to create dolls that reflected her identity. Years later, Saar discovered her first Black doll in an antique shop, inspiring a lifelong passion for collecting. Over the decades, her collection grew to more than 100 Black dolls, each carrying a unique story of childhood, history, and cultural memory. Some dolls reflected the painful racial stereotypes of their era, while others celebrated Black identity, beauty, and heritage. Through her artwork and collection, Betye Saar transformed these objects into powerful symbols of history, culture, memory, and social justice.
