Imam Mahdi (aj) himself mourns the thirst of Imam Hussain (p). A moving account is narrated from the shrine of Imam Hussain (p), where Sheikh Abdul-Zahra al-Kabi once recited a poem about Karbala.

Sheikh Abdul-Zahra was a renowned preacher, poet and reciter from Karbala. His sorrowful voice carried the tragedies of the Ahl al-Bayt (p) to many hearts. It is said that he was born on the birthday of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (p), so his father named him Abdul-Zahra, and that he passed away on the anniversary of her martyrdom.

One afternoon, a bookseller in the shrine courtyard offered him a book and said: Its price is not money. I only ask you to recite its poem.

The Sheikh opened it and found the famous elegy of Ibn Arandas al-Hilli, which he had long searched for. As he recited, he noticed an unknown Arab Sayyid listening silently and weeping.

How could Hussain be killed thirsty in Karbala, while oceans of greatness flow from every fingertip?

His father will give drink at Kawthar, and the Euphrates is the dowry of his mother Fatimah (p).

The Sayyid wept intensely, turned toward the shrine and repeated the verses. When the recitation ended, he suddenly disappeared. No one had seen him. The Sheikh became convinced that he was Imam Mahdi (aj), mourning his oppressed grandfather.

Allamah Amini writes that it is well known among believers that Imam Mahdi (aj) attends gatherings where this poem is recited.
