Two eggs that survived ravens and intruders and harsh wind and thirty days of Jackie and Shadow giving absolutely everything — now two chicks. Two tiny eagles in the nest that Jackie has lined with so much love and so much fluff it could hold the whole world. And Shadow — because Shadow is Shadow and will never stop being Shadow — brought fish. Jackie fed them both. 💛 The fish that Shadow hunted from Big Bear Lake. Delivered to the nest with the same devotion he has shown every single day of this season. Jackie breaking it into pieces small enough for beaks that have never eaten before, feeding two chicks who have never tasted anything, in the nest that has been waiting for exactly this moment since February 24th. Jackie feeding the chicks in this video is one of the most critical moments of their entire lives. The first meal establishes the feeding bond between the eaglets and their parents and begins the nutrition that will fuel the extraordinary growth ahead. Bald Eagle eaglets grow faster than almost any other bird of prey — going from roughly 85 grams at hatch to their full adult weight of 6 to 9 kilograms in just 10 to 12 weeks. Jackie feeding them fish from the first day sets them on that trajectory. Shadow hunting and delivering fish while Jackie broods and feeds is the division of roles that Jackie and Shadow will maintain through the entire eaglet rearing period. The system that kept the eggs alive for thirty days now shifts into the system that will raise two eagles above Big Bear Lake. Jackie is believed to be the first Bald Eagle ever hatched and fledged in Big Bear — her parents were named Ricky and Lucy. She has nested here since 2016. Together they have now raised SIX eaglets: Simba, Spirit, Sunny, Gizmo — and now their two newest.
