Tonight, two companies report earnings that could decide whether the AI trade still has room to run. Alphabet and Tesla both release second quarter results after today's market close, and between them they touch almost every part of the AI story right now, from cloud computing to robotics. Start with Alphabet. Analysts expect revenue of about $116.9 billion and earnings near $2.90 a share, both representing double digit growth from a year ago. But the number that really matters tonight is Google Cloud. The Street expects roughly 60% year over year growth there, and BofA Securities has pushed its own estimate as high as 70%. Under CEO Sundar Pichai, Alphabet has committed tens of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure, and tonight's cloud number is the clearest signal yet of whether that spending is actually converting into revenue. 1️⃣ Tesla is the second half of tonight's test. The company already delivered a record 480,126 vehicles last quarter, up 25% year over year, its strongest second quarter ever. 2️⃣ But deliveries are not the same as profit. Wall Street's earnings per share estimates for Tesla range from just 27 cents all the way up to 74 cents, an unusually wide spread that shows analysts genuinely disagree on whether those deliveries turned into margin or got eaten by price cuts. 3️⃣ CEO Elon Musk will also face questions tonight about spending on AI and robotics projects like Optimus and Dojo, investments that have not yet clearly shown up on the bottom line.
