Hawaii Weather - A total lunar eclipse will take place early morning on March 3rd and will be visible here in Hawaii. Here’s what you need to know. In Honolulu, the partial eclipse will begin at 11:50 PM on March 2nd. The moon is entering the earth’s shadow here. The total lunar eclipse, sometimes referred to as a blood moon, will begin at 1:04 a.m. The maximum eclipse, when the moon is closest to the center of the Earth's shadow, will be at 1:33 a.m. The total eclipse will end at 2:02 am, so you have a little under an hour to enjoy this celestial event. The reasoning behind the moon’s blood-like color is because of the way the earth’s atmosphere scatters light from the sun. A lunar eclipse occurs because the Earth casts a shadow on the moon. The atmosphere around the Earth scatters away shorter wavelengths of light, like blue light, and allows longer wavelengths, like red, to pass through and reflect off the moon. This atmospheric scattering of blue light is the same reason that the sky is blue during the day. Unfortunately, there are a few clouds out there this evening.
