Good Morning Minute🏛️ A bill moving through the Michigan Legislature aimed at strengthening work-life boundaries is drawing discussion from both workers and employers. Senate Bill 948, sponsored by Sen. Erika Geiss, D-Taylor, would prohibit employers from requiring employees to respond to work-related communications outside their usual work hours. The proposed Workplace Employee Boundaries Act would also prohibit employers from retaliating against workers who choose not to respond. Supporters say the legislation would help workers maintain a healthier work-life balance in an increasingly connected world. Jared Tinklenberg, owner of HighDive Kitchen and Bar in Kalamazoo, said he also supports employees having personal time and agrees workers should not face retaliation for not responding outside of work. However, Tinklenberg said he believes lawmakers should consider industry-specific exemptions for businesses like restaurants, where after-hours communication is often necessary.
