Why Americas Power Grid Is at Risk of Blackouts [uXdXhHBcNV8]
Flipping a light switch is one of those things you only notice when it doesn't work — and Americans have had the luxury of not noticing for about a century. That streak is why it's worth paying attention when the normally sedate bureaucrats who oversee the power grid start telling Congress that the red lights are flashing. Here's what they're actually worried about. In 2025, roughly 60% of Spain's electricity supply dropped off the grid in about five seconds, leaving parts of four countries dark for 10 hours. American regulators warn we aren't immune. In 2026, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation projected that nearly half the U.S. population faces high risk of rolling blackouts within a few years. PJM — the country's largest grid operator, serving 65 million customers — expects to lose about 40 gigawatts of capacity to plant retirements by 2030, and to replace it with, at best, a little over 30. Why the gap? Grid operators buy whatever power is cheapest, rebidding as often as every five minutes. Wind and solar are cheap when they run — subsidies sometimes let their prices go negative — but in 2024 wind only generated power about a third of the time and solar less than a quarter. The result?
