In a recent conversation, I asked Bill Gallagher if he’d ever worked with someone who had a vision epiphany—not the inspiring kind, but the “I don’t want to do this anymore” kind. He said, “Yeah, all the time.” One founder went through the whole process—mapping out roles, responsibilities, future org design— and realized he didn’t want to do any of it. Not CEO. Not COO. Not sales, ops, marketing—none of it. He just wanted to own the business. That was the role that lit him up. So Bill said: “Great. Let’s grow it and sell it.” And they did. Not at the peak. Not at some perfect fantasy moment. They sold on the way up—with a future story, some progress, and a clean plan to exit. That’s the part most people don’t talk about: Sometimes the most honest thing you can do as a founder… is admit that you don’t want the job you gave yourself.
