The Badwater 135 - The Most Extreme Race On Earth [hqodVKmitTL]
The Badwater 135 is Globally recognized as the worlds toughest foot race. This event starts in Death Valley which is the lowest elevation in North American and for many finishes at the top of Mount Whitney which is the highest mountain in the continuous 48 states of the United states. To make the event even more daunting, it takes place in July which is the hottest time of year to visit Death Valley. Competitors have 48 hours to complete this 135 mile race which covers a total of 14,600 feet of cumulative vertical ascent. Summer temperatures can reach 130 degrees Fahrenheit on the front end of the race and drop below freezing as they make their way up Mount Whitney towards the finish line. This event is brutal. While the official finish line ends at the Whitney Portal many, with proper permits, extend their run to the top of Mount Whitney which takes the race to near 160 miles of distance and a total cumulative elevation to over 19,000 ft. Each runner is responsible for arranging their own support crews to provide their runner with aid such as food and water throughout this demanding event. The official event was inspired by Al Arnold and Jay Birmingham who were the first two to successfully run the course in 1977 and 1981 respectively and since then it has inspired many to run the official event. A small set of people have intensified this event by running the event with no support crew and even completing a quad run going from Badwater to Mount Whitney back to Badwater and back to Mount Whitney a 2nd time.
