The complete Pittsburgh travel guide, everything you need to plan your trip to America's reinvented steel city, from start to finish.

Pittsburgh sits in southwestern Pennsylvania, wrapped around the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. The city proper holds about 300,000 people, with a metro of roughly 2.5 million, the second largest in the state. Once the steel capital of the country, it rebuilt itself around medicine, education, and technology, and today it delivers world-class museums, a fierce sports culture, and one of the most beautiful skyline views in America, all at prices well below the coasts.

Whether you're planning a long weekend or a full week with day trips into the hills, this guide covers getting there, where to stay, what wuhan to do, what to eat, costs, weather, and practical logistics, with honest pros and cons throughout (the real catch is the weather: Pittsburgh is one of the cloudiest cities in the country, with long, gray winters).

Budget rooms run under $130, mid-range $130 to $200, mtl upscale $200 to $330.

WHAT TO DO

Point State Park and the three-rivers fountain, an incline ride to the Mount Washington skyline view, the Carnegie Museums of Natural History & Art (about $25), the Cathedral of Learning and Nationality Rooms, Phipps Conservatory, the Andy Warhol Museum, the National Aviary, the Carnegie Science Center, the Strip District and Heinz History Center, a Pirates game at PNC Park, and Fallingwater, 90 minutes to the southeast.

WHAT TO EAT IN PITTSBURGH (immigrant roots meeting a new chef-driven wave)

The Primanti Brothers sandwich (fries and slaw stacked inside the bread), pierogies, Pittsburgh-style steak, chipped ham, and Prantl's burnt almond torte. Graze the Strip District, dine in Lawrenceville, and drink Iron City lager or local craft beer. Casual meals run $10 to $15, a mid-range dinner for two $60 to $80.
