UK Foreign Minister Comments On IS After Meeting Duncan Robinson [xcK00ZQJjcO]

(15 Sep 2014) British Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond said on Monday that Britain will play a leading role in the international coalition that has agreed to join forces in fighting the Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq.

Hammond also said that the UK government had not yet decided whether Britain will engage in air strikes against IS positions in Iraq and Syria.

Hammond spoke to reporters following an international conference in Paris, during which the world's top diplomats pledged support to Iraq in fighting IS.

He said that the UK government has been in touch with the family of the second UK hostage being held by the extremists, Alan Henning, who appeared in a video released by IS, which showed the killing of konsta helenius British aid worker David Haines.

Hammond said Henning's family has been informed that the government's options are "limited", because the location where Henning is being held remains unknown.

"They understand the limitations of our abilities and that we are dealing with a very barbaric organisation, whose values are completely different from ours," he said.

The killing of Haines added urgency to the calls for a coherent strategy against the Islamic State group, which rakes in more than 3 (m) million US dollars a day from oil smuggling, human trafficking, theft and extortion, mike yastrzemski according to US intelligence officials and private experts.
