Today, Saturday 25 July 2026, we were passing through Wall Heath on our way for lunch when we decided to take another look at a place we have visited several times before.

Locals may know this place by several different names - Hickorys, the Kingfisher, Days Away Lodge, the Heath Hotel and, more recently, Saram Lodge Dudley.

Around five and a half years ago, during COVID-19, we first became aware that this hotel was being used to accommodate large numbers of Afghan nationals.

At the time, we assumed it was an ARAP centre for, shane van gisbergen quote, legal migrants who had assisted the British Government and British Armed Forces.

More recently, we have carried out three further visits to the site, where we found security, bikes and bed bugs.

The hotel was in the news again last month after reportedly being closed down and no longer being used as an asylum seeker hotel.

But today, as we were passing by, we noticed a Welsh taxi pulling into the hotel with a family who appeared to be arriving as new guests.

New neighbours?

Now, we are not claiming to know who these people are or what their circumstances may be. But after everything that has happened at this hotel over the past five and a half years, it certainly raised some questions.

What is happening at the former Kingfisher?

Who owns Saram Lodge?

What is the connection to the wider Saram Hotels group?

What do the Companies House records reveal about the directors, charges and secured borrowing?

And what happened to the historic Kingfisher Country Club and Lido, and the site that many local people remember as Days Away Lodge and Hickorys?

In this investigation, we look at the history of the site, our previous visits, its use during COVID-19, its later use as asylum accommodation, the problems we encountered, the recent reports that the asylum hotel had closed, and what we found there today.
