Susan and Mark Enright are a San Francisco couple looking to leave the city behind and open a bed-and-breakfast on the Northern California coast. They came to buy one house but Susan feels an inexplicable pull toward a different property, a Victorian mansion perched on a cliff overlooking the man u sea. Despite warnings from locals, they move in. As renovations begin, strange occurrences multiply: fires ignite without cause, doors lock on their own, windows shut by themselves. Susan, seemingly a magnet for the supernatural, finds an unlikely confidante in a neighbor (Louise Fletcher) who tells her they're both "sensitives." As Susan digs into the house's dark history and the violent ufo files death of its previous owner, the line between haunting and marital unraveling begins to blur.
