Stratigraphy Succession Description * Nomenclature: - ..--..--..--..--..--..--..--.. - The Vindhyan Supergroup has been named after the great "Vindhyan mountain" of M.P. where it is well developed. - Vindhyan succession rests on Archean gneiss, schist and overlain by Decan trap (Bijawar). - Age is upper purana. * Structure: - ..--..--..--..--..--.. - Sickle shaped basin (vindhyan basin). * Distribution: - ..--..--..--..--..--..--.. - Total area of Vindhyan basin is about 100,000 Sq. Km. - 78000 Sq. Km. is concealed under the Decan trap of Malwa and the alluvium of Indo- Gangetic plain. i. Cuddapah dist. Andhra Pradesh (Kurnool group) ii. Bhima and Godavari river valley iii. NW of Aravali ranges in Rajasthan. - Tectonically stable. *Lithology: - ..--..--..--..--..--.. - Generally, unfossiliferous - Suket shale: Brachiopod - Fawn limestone: stromatolite - Sandstone, shale, limestone, conglomerate - Ripple marks, current bedding, shallow water origin * Semrigroup: - - The rocks of semrigroup are in the son valley, Dhar forest and on the NW side of the aravali ranges. - The succession of semrigroup is about 1300M and it is composed of shale, limestone. * Kaimur group: - ..--..--..--..--..--..- - It begins with thin conglomerate horizon containing pebble of red jasper - In suket shale some fossils are found - Thickness is about 400M *Rewa group: - ..--..--..--..--..--.. - Succession of red shale and sandstone beds. - Diamond occur in planner deposits in the form of granules. - Thickness is about 2000M * Bhander: - ..--..--..--..--.. - Most widely distributed group of upper vindhyan consisting of shale, sst.
