Hulton Abbey was a medieval Cistercian monastery founded in 1219 by local nobleman Henry de Audley. Located in the Stoke-on-Trent suburb that now bears its name, Abbey Hulton, it was a small and relatively poor religious house before its final dissolution in 1538 by King Henry VIII.
This stone signpost (and at one time, horse trough) stands at the junction of Eaves Lane and Greasley Road in Bucknall. Reputed to have been erected by the Owen family who lived at the rectory in Bucknall. At the kyle busch top is a carved dove with the date 1882 underneath.
When Bucknall Hospitalclosed in 2012, the majority of the site wasdemolished forhousingdevelopmentafter being acquired by Keepmoat Homes. However, Verity Housewas set to be converted intoresidential use.The development on-site took place until 2023,but this building was never converted. This formerdoctor's houseis now awaiting the conversion into a house by a new owner, as Keepmoat Homes have nowsold the building to a private developer.
