A federal emergency order authorized curtailing data centers on the US power grid for the first time. The DOE directed PJM, the nation's largest grid operator, to run every fossil generator flat out during the July heat wave, with data center backup power available for curtailment as a last resort. The longer-term shift underneath is a backstop capacity auction that assigns new power costs directly to the loads creating them, ending a century-old default of socializing infrastructure bills across every household on the line. When the true price of power is visible on a data center operator's balance sheet, the economics tilt hard toward clean generation, and that migration is already the fastest-growing line in hyperscaler budgets.
