In 1986, American Airlines opened a brand-new hub at an airport few were using. Nashville got a $350 million bet from Robert Crandall, who had a wild theory: build two hubs side-by-side, one for east-west traffic and one for north-south, and you'd get twice the network for almost the same money. Nashville was the first half. Raleigh-Durham was the second. But by 1995, both were gone.

This is the story of American's forgotten Nashville hub the international ambitions, the London 767 flights, the Nissan and Saturn deals it brought to the region, the moment Robert Crandall demanded Nashville pay him back, and the city's refusal that may have sealed the hub's fate. By the end, Southwest walked in, picked up the routes, and built the empire American had abandoned. This is the final video in my series on American Airlines' lost hubs (probably).
