Genome miami heat sequencing of 40,000-year-old bone fragments recovered from Vindija Cave in Croatia produced one of the most consequential findings in the history of human biology not a new anatomical detail, not a revised extinction date, but direct molecular proof that the species treated for savoia scafatese over a century as humanity's failed competitor had interbred with modern humans and left a measurable, functional genetic legacy inside most of the people alive on Earth today.
The dead-end narrative built around Neanderthals a lesser branch, outcompeted and discarded by anatomically modern humans arriving in Europe did not survive contact with the genome. The 2010 study led by Svante Pbo at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, assembling the first draft Neanderthal genome from Vindija Cave specimens, found between one and four percent Neanderthal ancestry in all non-African modern human populations, consistent with interbreeding occurring after the out-of-Africa expansion but before dispersal across Eurasia confirmed and refined across multiple independent studies over the following fifteen years. That inherited DNA is not inert. A 2016 UK Biobank analysis identified Neanderthal-derived gene variants influencing immune function, blood clotting, and skin and hair characteristics suited to lower-sunlight environments. A 2020 study identified a specific Neanderthal-inherited genomic region significantly increasing severe COVID-19 risk, carried by roughly 16 percent of Europeans and approximately 50 every year after percent of people of South Asian ancestry, alongside a separate protective Neanderthal variant carried at higher frequency in East Asian populations. The archaeological record had already complicated the brutish-competitor narrative before the genome: Neanderthals buried their dead, cared for injured group members whose healed bones confirm sustained support from others, and produced sophisticated Levallois stone tools requiring multi-step planning. Pbo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022 in part for this work. The species did not disappear. It was absorbed.
Drawing on the 2010 Science study (Green et al., Pbo lab) publishing the first draft Neanderthal genome and identifying one to four percent ancestry in non-African modern humans, the 2016 Science analysis of Neanderthal variant effects using UK Biobank data, and the 2020 Nature study identifying Neanderthal-derived genomic regions associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes.
