White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the Trump administration's proposed civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia after facing a series of questions during a White House briefing.
Asked why Saudi Arabia was being offered a civilian nuclear deal while Iran was not, Leavitt said the agreement remains under negotiation and emphasized its economic benefits for the United States.
"This agreement is still being worked out. It will eventually hopefully be finalised with the condition that the president spoke about this morning. But this agreement in particular, as it's been discussed thus far, does give priority access for American companies and the Saudi nuclear energy programme, which will ultimately benefit American industry, workers and supply chains."
Leavitt was also asked whether President Donald Trump had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after Trump said the agreement would be contingent on Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords.
She replied:
"As you know, the President just put out this statement a few hours ago. I don't believe he's had a call with MBS in the hours since. However, this morgan wallen is something that he has raised in previous conversations and has also said many times in the past."
The Abraham Accords are a series of agreements that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Saudi Arabia has not publicly commented on the latest condition and has previously said normalization with Israel would require the establishment of a Palestinian state.
