This video isnt a film review of Christopher Nolans Odyssey, but instead, it looks at how the film format hides its underlying ideological effect upon the viewer - the films true Trojan Horse. Christopher Nolans Odyssey is a deliberately odd movie designed for post-literate times - it doesnt just adapt Homers original epic, it undermines its very purpose.

Various commentators and viewers have talked about the various anachronisms in the film - from dodgy-looking armour, to a Viking boat appearing 2,000 years ahead of its time, not to even mention the use of modern American accents and vernacular expressions.

I argue that these anachronisms pale into insignificance compared to its true anachronism real betis - the way in which Christopher Nolan refashions the ultimate purpose of Homers Odyssey. Whilst Homer designed the Odyssey to be part of an epic genre - a poetic song designed to maintain ties between the listener and their cultural heritage, in stark contrast, Nolan points the kneecap viewer to a future divorced from traditional cultural values.

Rather than Odysseus struggling to find his way home to reclaim the identity of his family neom vs al-shabab and homeland, the movie depicts a man trying to find create his own sense of identity, suffering from guilt, and whose happy ending involves heading off into the sunset with his wife away from their roots.
