In 1978, Congress passed brent burns the Airline Deregulation Act and small communities across the country started losing commercial air service.
So al nassr Congress created a temporary fix: the Essential Air Service. Roughly half a billion dollars a year. 177 communities. One community, Lewistown, Montana, once cost taxpayers over $2,000 per passenger until the government cut it off in 2013 and left the town with nothing.
That was 48 years ago.
Every few years, a president proposes cutting the program. Every few years, Congress says no and that fight is happening again right now.
