How can data centers be regulated in Michigan? | Deep Dive with Remington Hernandez (Ep. 3) [BMZArlFdHyU]
Every week, we're going beyond the headlines to explore the issues shaping Michigan, and hear directly from the people at the heart of the issues. In episode three of Deep Dive, Remington Hernandez joined several Michigan Senate Democrats at a press conference on Jun. 18, 2026, where they talked about the bills they're pushing through the legislature to regulate data centers—the ever-growing AI infrastructure booming in recent years with the development of artificial intelligence technology. Drawing from lessons learned in other states, the group of Senators say they're charting a different path with seven bills. “We're building the economy of the future, but in a way that protects our environment, strengthens our communities, and ensures working people share in the successes," Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) said. One bill would put in place permitting requirements for entities using 550,000 gallons of water per day, with a daily cap of 2 million gallons. Water infrastructure upgrade costs could not be passed onto residents, as well. "Our communities deserve protections that keep essential public resources affordable and reliable," Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) said. "Water infrastructure is a public necessity, and we must ensure that Michigan is not being exploited by private industries to help their profit margins." Another measure requires data centers pay for a minimum of 90% of their energy usage, use 90% clean energy and put up collateral for when facilities close. Union wages and labor agreements for workers also mandated under the effort. Additionally, there's transparency measures like a ban on certain non-disclosure agreements, additional public hearings, monitoring and reports from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
