Bald eagle parents Jackie and Shadow are raising two eaglets this season: Sandy hatched on April 4, 2026, and Luna, hatched on April 5, 2026. An important milestone and unexpected development occurred at the Big Bear bald eagle nest this morning. Eaglets, Sandy and Luna, have almost reached 12 weeks of age, a critical developmental window where they are fully grown and preparing to fledge. During a routine morning on the branches, Sandy unexpectedly lost footing and fell from the nest. The camera captured the intense moment Sandy dropped down, landing on a lower branch before tumbling further. Fortunately, natural instincts kicked in beautifully. Sandy managed a mid-air recovery, spread those powerful wings, and took successful flight. We are incredibly relieved to report that local spotters and the team at the Friends of Big Bear Valley have since sighted Sandy. The young eagle appears uninjured, healthy, and has been seen flying.
