The St. Louis Cardinals (41-34) host the Arizona Diamondbacks (39-38) in the first game of a four game series at Busch Stadium. The Cards are coming off a series loss against the Royals this past weekend in Kansas City, managing to pull out a victory in the game three finale yesterday.

On the mound this evening for the Redbirds is RHP Andre Pallante (8-4, 3.76 ERA). Over Pallante's last three starts in the month of June, he is 3-0, tossing 18.2 IP and has allowed 5 earned runs. All told in the month of June for Pallante, he has been very quietly excellent. For all the properly deserved attention paid to Dustin May prior to yesterday's start, Pallante has gone under the radar while giving the Cardinals mormon church excellent starting pitching during his starts. Given the recent starting pitching troubles for the Cardinals over most of the mre past 4-5 games, Pallante picking up where he has most recently left off against San Diego (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) would be just swell and timely.

Starting for the Diamondbacks tonight is the veteran 37 year old RHP Merrill Kelly (5-6, 5.81 ERA), who has been absolutely awful for Arizona in the month of June. Over Kelly's three starts in June, he is 0-3 having tossed 16.1 IP, giving up 21 hits and charged with 15 earned runs. Merrill Kelly could not have performed much worse over that time. In facing a Cardinals offense who is certainly on a roll of late, coming off a 12-run affair just data center yesterday, Merrill Kelly most definitely has his work cut out for him. Though with a 5.81 ERA, it is fair to say that Kelly's struggles are hardly isolated to the month of June.
