Tonight the St. Louis Cardinals (39-31) take on the San Diego Padres (37-34) for the second game in their three game series at Busch Stadium. Last night in the 3-0 Redbirds victory, the entire story was the performance by RHP Dustin May. May’s complete game, 1-hitter over the Padres was sensational! It will be a very challenging act to follow in this Cards rotation tonight. Starting for the Redbirds this evening is RHP Andre Pallante (7-4, 3.88 ERA), who has been very good over his last two outings. On both occasions, Pallante went at least into the 6th inning, never allowing more than 2 earned runs. Looking further back since May 17th of this year, Pallante has tossed 27.2 IP, giving up a paltry 9 earned runs over those five starts. This has been an extremely impressive stretch by Pallante, and he looks to continue his strong performance against a Padres team with serious consistency issues regarding scoring runs in 2026. Taking the ball for the Friars tonight is RHP Michael King (4-5, 3.46 ERA). The 31 year old was originally sent over to the Padres prior to the 2024 season, as a major component in the trade that dealt OF Juan Soto to the Yankees. Over King’s past four starts he is 0-3, allowing 16 earned runs and 23 hits in 22.1 IP. For King, it has clearly been the roughest stretch of his 2026 season so far. With the Padres currently in a three-way tie for the final National League Wild Card seed, they have very little room going forward to hide underperformance from anywhere on their roster. Will Andre Pallante continue building on his strongest stretch of 2026, namely against a Padres lineup often found wanting this year? Can the Redbirds offense keep up their timely hitting against Michael King who himself is trying to get off the ropes?
