Karmelo Anthony is now a convicted murderer. The 19-year-old was convicted of first-degree murder in the April 2025 fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet. Anthony attended Centennial High School, while Austin attended Memorial High School. The fatal confrontation occurred under a tent at the track meet. Prosecutors argued that Anthony initiated the confrontation by sitting under the tent and also admitted to the stabbing. During closing arguments, Bill Wirskye said, "You don't get to meet a shove with a stab, especially if you provoke the shove." Anthony's attorney, Mike Howard, claimed Metcalf and his twin brother, Hunter, were the aggressors. Howard explained that Anthony warned Austin not to touch him and said he had a right to defend himself after Austin initiated contact. Howard argued, "There is no evidence Karmelo did anything but really think he was defending himself in that split second of chaos." Judge John Roach Jr. gave the jury the option of considering manslaughter if they were unable to unanimously agree on a murder charge. Instead, the jurors quickly reached a guilty verdict on first-degree murder, which carries a sentence between five years and life in prison. The jury, which did not contain a single black member, deliberated for less than three hours before convicting Anthony. The same jurors will now decide Anthony's sentence. Anthony's mother, Kala Hayes, has pleaded with the jury to have mercy on her son. The state has now agreed that the defense can argue "sudden passion" meaning the defendant was in an intense emotional state at the time of the murder.
