BREAKING: A Republican senator just DEMOLISHED Trump’s defense of J6 insurrectionists and the slush fund payouts he wants to give them. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) just did something remarkably rare: he stood up and told Donald Trump, in plain language, that he's dead wrong. After Trump took to Truth Social to defend his controversial "Anti-Weaponization Fund" — insisting that January 6th rioters who assaulted police officers and stormed the Capitol are "great American Patriots" who were "hunted down like dogs" — Tillis fired back with a statement that pulled no punches. "The criminals who assaulted police officers and defiled our nation's Capitol are not 'great American patriots' who are 'victims of government abuse,'" Tillis said. "Anyone who attacked law enforcement should still be in prison, not getting a check from the federal government." This is major! A sitting Republican senator directly contradicted the President of his own party's characterization of the Capitol attack, refusing to launder violence against police officers as patriotism. But wait it gets even better. Tillis didn't stop there. He used Trump's own rambling defense of the fund as proof of exactly what he and Senator John Cornyn have been saying all along: "The President made it clear today that the so-called Anti Weaponization Fund is still alive, which is exactly why we are attempting to formally end it." In other words, Trump's attempt to attack Cornyn backfired spectacularly, handing Tillis the confirmation he needed that the fund everyone claimed was already dead is, in fact, still very much on the table. Tillis also made clear where the real obstruction is coming from — not from him or Cornyn, but from inside Trump's own orbit. He praised Acting AG Todd Blanche as "forthright, thoughtful and patient," while placing blame squarely on what he called "an incompetent personal advisor to the President" who "refuses to amend the bogus settlement." Tillis’s exoneration of Blanche may be a bridge too far for most of us and seems like the senator’s attempt to hedge his bets enough to eventually confirm the acting AG once his demands are met. But, still, this is a Republican senator publicly breaking with Trump's framing of a violent attack on American democracy, while simultaneously exposing the real reason a Cabinet confirmation is stalled: Trump's inner circle would rather protect a slush fund benefiting insurrectionists than simply put basic accountability in writing. When members of Trump's own party start pushing back this directly, it's worth paying attention.
