Oprah Winfrey is starting a new chapter. The former daytime host shared that she will be closing her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa in 2027—two decades after she first launched the boarding school for girls grades eight to 12 in 2007. Following the completion of the 2027 academic year, the school campus will be returned to South Africa’s Gauteng Department of Education, as envisioned in the original partnership agreement for the school, according to Oprah Daily. Current students will still be able to complete the remainder of their schooling with uninterrupted financial support. The multi-Emmy award winner will instead shift her focus to a scholarship program, which a representative for Winfrey told People will “double the amount of girls who will have access to education.” The representative also provided clarity on what will happen to students who are not scheduled to graduate before the school ceases operations, stating that those students will transfer to other schools with Winfrey’s continued financial backing.
