The Atlantic covers a fifth of Earth's surface. Sailors have crossed it for centuries, submarines have run beneath it since World War One, and transatlantic cables have rested on its floor since 1866. Yet less than a quarter of the ocean floor has been mapped in useful detail. We simply don't know what's down there.

This video tells the story of what's actually hiding beneath the Atlantic's surface: a mountain range longer than the Andes and Rockies combined, volcanoes still active today, and ecosystems that thrive without a single photon of sunlight powered entirely by chemistry pouring out of the Earth's interior. Black smokers, tube worms, life where life should be impossible.

This isn't abstract science. The Atlantic floor is directly connected to European climate, agricultural productivity, and the temperature of the room you're sitting in right now.
