A data centre's is one building, in one county, drawing every hour of every day — and often somewhere already dry, competing with the town's own supply in the same month. The mechanism is simple: servers make heat, heat needs cooling, cooling evaporates water, and that water leaves as steam. It doesn't come back to the river or the town. Google's data centres used 10.9 billion gallons in 2025 — up 34% in twelve months and more than double 2021. But the fix already exists. Amazon reports a water usage effectiveness of 0.12 L/kWh against an industry average of about 0.84.
