Hurricane Genevieve is significantly intensifying today off the western coast of Mexico, and further rapid intensification is likely overnight tonight into tomorrow. Genevieve is now a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, and could reach Category 4 as it approaches the Baja California Peninsula, where a tropical storm watch is now in effect. Genevieve is expected to reach its closest approach to the peninsula on Friday, before turning away and dying off in the cooler waters out to sea. Elsewhere, two areas of interest have a moderate chance of formation in the North Atlantic. One area is entering the eastern Caribbean and could develop into a tropical cyclone as it moves westwards, and could become a Gulf Coast threat. Also, another area of interest is likely to impact the Leeward Islands as a tropical storm at the end of the week, and could strengthen beyond this as it continues westwards. The next names on the Atlantic naming list are Laura and Marco. In the Western Pacific, another tropical storm has formed in the South China Sea, and is likely to impact the southern coast of China in a couple of days as a significant tropical storm, before moving inland and dying off late this week.
