New Yorkers are enduring extreme heat that is expected to persist through the weekend, Reuters reported. The sweltering temperatures are affecting everyone, from small business owners to pedestrians in the bustling city. The “real-feel" temperatures across parts of the region were forecast to reach as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat prompted city officials to open hundreds of cooling centers, deploy mobile relief vans stocked with water. New York Independent System Operator on July 1 issued a press release suggesting power conservation by raising air-conditioning thermostats. It has also requested to postpone unnecessary use of major appliances until demand on the electric system eases.
