On the sixth of June, 1912, the most powerful volcanic eruption of the twentieth century began on a remote peninsula in southwestern Alaska. It ejected fifteen cubic kilometers of magma in sixty hours thirty times more than Mount St. Helens. The ash column rose thirty kilometers into the sky, three times the height of Mount Everest. Darkness covered half the Northern Hemisphere. And for forty-one years, every textbook named the wrong mountain.
This is the story of Novarupta the planetary catastrophe the world chose to forget, the botanist from Ohio who walked into a valley of ten thousand smokes in 1916 and found a landscape that should not exist on Earth, and the single geologist who, in 1953, quietly destroyed everything science thought it knew about what happened in June of 1912.
The film traces how Mount Katmai collapsed without ever erupting, why one of the largest eruptions in five thousand years left no recorded death toll, how the global temperature dropped by close to a degree through 1913, and what is building, right now, beneath the same Alaska Peninsula while the world looks elsewhere.
