Several trees fell onto power lines, breaking the lines and leaving the neighborhood without electricity. The utility company estimated that the power outage could last for approximately 24 hours. With the temperature still very high, the house quickly became uncomfortable. By nighttime, it was too hot to sleep without any air circulation. Since the regular ceiling fans and air-conditioning system could not operate, I decided to use my Hyundai Palisade as an emergency power source. I gathered the portable table fans from around the house, placed them near the window, and carefully ran an outdoor-rated extension cord through the window to the vehicle. I connected the fans to the Palisade’s power outlet and kept the vehicle running so the fans could operate through the night. The fans provided enough airflow to make the room more comfortable and helped us get some sleep while waiting for the electricity to return. The vehicle was kept completely outdoors and away from enclosed spaces. A running vehicle should never be left inside a garage or near an enclosed area because carbon monoxide can build up and become extremely dangerous. It is also important to check the vehicle’s owner’s manual, power-output limits, extension-cord rating, and connected appliance wattage before using a vehicle as an emergency power source. The outage also affected our access to water, so I gathered our empty water containers and drove to a nearby store where drinking-water refills were available. I filled the containers and brought them home so we would have enough safe water for drinking and basic household needs during the outage. This experience showed me how quickly normal daily life can change after a severe storm. A few basic supplies—portable fans, extension cords, flashlights, charged power banks, water containers, fuel, and drinking water—can make a major difference during an emergency.
