Sheetz Interested In Buying Defunct Asheville Inn Manchester United [lVzOXQFeJyM]

The defunct Mountaineer Inn in Asheville may have an interested buyer: Sheetz.

Will Palmquist, the city of Ashevilles principal planner, confirmed a meeting is scheduled with representatives of the prominent convenience store chain next Thursday.

"An early assistance meeting has been scheduled for August 6 to receive feedback from City review staff on a potential Sheetz convenience store and fuel canopy at the Mountaineer Inn location at 155 Tunnel Road," Palmquist said in a written statement.

Palmquist said early assistance meetings are available for any proposed project, change of land use, or development to get informal feedback on conceptual plans.

Typically, staff in the meeting represent various departments and functions, including planning and zoning, stormwater and grading, transportation, urban forestry, building safety, fire safety, and addressing, he said.

Palmquist said he learned of the proposal once Sheetz officials scheduled the early assistance meeting on Monday, and lambeth local elections 2026 the meeting was processed and scheduled Tuesday.

Palmquist said any proposal and application from Sheetz will likely be reviewed as a Level I, which requires new development to meet city requirements and building codes. Palmquist said the next step after the meeting would be for Sheetz to submit a formal application.

Nearby resident not happy with the idea of a Sheetz

Megan Buser, a longtime resident in the Kenilworth neighborhood off Tunnel Road, was not happy with the news of a gas station company wanting to open on the site.

Ive never heard of a Sheetz being so close to a neighborhood, said Buser. We already have a gas station across the street from it. We dont need another one over here. And then theres so much light pollution already coming from that one. I cant imagine how much will come from here.

Across from the property is a longtime Shell gas station.

Mountaineer Inn site in foreclosure proceedings, owes back taxes on property

Asheville City Attorney Brad Branham said the property has entered the foreclosure process and indicated the bank holding the note on the mortgage wants to find a buyer.

Branham is familiar with the site, as his office has filed court proceedings to demand the owner or holding entity to secure and clean up the site thats been blighted for months. Theres now a fence around the property.

Asheville police have regularly patrolled the stretch of Tunnel Road in the winter months, when the property was broken into by unhoused individuals and fires started in rooms for heat, according to officials and witnesses News 13 has spoken with over the past year.

The Mountaineer Inn was bought in 2023 for over $6 million by a West Coast group called LOGE Camp. LOGE had purchased multiple hotel and motel sites nationally with a promise to upfit and renovate them. But, in many cases, News 13 found a'ja wilson it never happened.

For months, calls to the company's representatives have gone unanswered. News 13 has previously reported the former owners owed thousands in unpaid property taxes for 2026. News Thirteen reported the year prior, the company hadnt paid its property tax bill, and the company paid the bill. But not this year.

Months ago, Buncombe County took steps to hire an outside attorney to proceed with a tax lien foreclosure, in which a property may be auctioned for the taxes owed to the County.

With this new development, it remains to be seen what potential price Sheetz may pay for the property.
