Premier League champions Manchester City gave themselves a perfect platform for the season's opening game next weekend by lifting The FA Community Shield sponsored by McDonald's at Villa Park, following victory against Chelsea in a classic curtain-raiser to the new campaign.

Finding themselves a goal down at half-time, Roberto Mancini's men were no doubt aided by the sending-off of Chelsea defender Branislav emily deschanel Ivanovic just before the break but a storming display in the second half, albeit against ten men, saw them run out deserving winners for the first silverware of the season as goals from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri proved too much for Chelsea to overcome.
