HIGHLIGHTS: Luis Robert Jr. Stays Red Hot as White Sox Power Past Astros (5.13.23) [M0jwxKSP8Av]
With a home run and an RBI single in the eighth inning, Luis Robert Jr. helped boost the White Sox to a win over the Houston Astros. The Astros couldn’t capitalize on singles by Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and a Yordan Álvarez through the 1st and 2nd innings. The Sox also had a couple hits early on including a double by Yoán Moncada and single by Gavin Sheets that didn’t convert any runs. Then, Luis Robert Jr. stepped up to the plate for his second at bat in the 4th. There might not be a player in baseball hotter than Luis Robert, Jr. at the plate right now. Coming into today’s game, the right-handed hitter ranked among MLB May leaders in OPS (1st), slugging pct. (1st), total bases (1st, 31), on-base percentage (2nd), home runs (T2nd), RBI (T2nd), hits (T2nd), average (3rd), runs scored (T3rd) and extra-base hits (T4th, 8). Today, he added a home run to his May total, crushing his 5th homer of the month in the bottom of the fourth inning. The ball traveled 427’ out to left field and counted as the first run for either team. Astros pitcher Brandon Bielak held the damage to one run over 5.0 inning pitched. Bielak allowed eight hits while striking out four as Phil Maton came in to take over and try to keep the scoring to a minimum. When it comes to pitching, the Good Guys held the Astros at bay. Starting Pitcher Dylan Cease took the mound looking to match his Opening Day performance against the Astros lineup. Allowing just four hits, two walks while striking out five, Cease’s slider was sliding as he pitched through six keeping the Astros scoreless. Reynaldo López took over in the seventh securing the first two outs before passing the baton to Joe Kelly. Kelly allowed a single run to score tying the game, 1-1. Kelly redeemed himself as he forced a Yordan Álvarez groundout followed by big strikeouts by Kyle Tucker and former White Sox great, José Abreu. The White Sox lineup showed their best in the eighth inning. Moncada smacked a ball into right field for a stand-up double. Luis Robert Jr. was back and ready for more as he knocked a line drive RBI-single into right field, scoring Moncada. Hanser Alberto moved Luis Robert, Jr. over to second base. Seby Zavala took a turn hitting to right field, knocking an RBI single to give the White Sox the lead, 3-1. Kendall Graveman finished the job and earned a save in the process, tossing 14 pitches, allowing one hit and striking out one as the White Sox beat the Astros 3-1.
